Straight Bullet

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) investigators recently arrested Michelle Cato on charges that she murdered Sheila Zaldana in front of dozens of witnesses on a recent afternoon in the Skid Row district of Downtown. The incident is believed to be gang-related, according to authorities, and Zaldana's murder spurred this poem by Antoaneta Kolarova, an artist and immigrant from Bulgaria who lives in the Skid Row District.
Straight Bullet

Dedicated to the ones who do not have a voice to speak

Straight bullet through the head
Another woman dead
I hear sirens, I hear crying
Another soul departing

Death comes suddenly, O Lord
Death comes uninvited, unexpected
To make another child an orphan
Full of bitterness and hatred

It hurts to hear helicopters
Early in the morning
It hurts to hear helicopters
Late at night

What happened to the birds
Singing in the sky? What happened to the butterflies
Dancing with the rainbow?

Straight bullet
Piercing the dreams
And so much goodness
The poor woman had

Straight bullets
Are the thoughts they think
Killing their brothers and sisters
Killing their own

A straight bullet Took the girl's mother
The silence is deafening
The silence is brutally dark.
