34th District U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard is inviting any interested high school students she represents to participate in the 2010 Congressional Student Art Competition, which will be open to digital creations for the first time.
The competition has been dubbed "An Artistic Discovery" and is open to any students in grades 9 through 12 who reside in the 34th District, which covers Downtown, Little Tokyo, portions of the Chinatown, Pico-Union, Westlake and Florence-Firestone districts, most of the Eastside, and a number of communities in southeastern Los Angeles County, including Bell, Bellflower, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Maywood, Vernon, and Walnut Park.
The first-place entry in the annual competition represents the 34th Congressional District for one year in a national exhibit at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The winning student will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship, a gift certificate, and a cash prize. The top prize also comes with travel arrangements for the student, a guardian, and an art teacher to attend the opening exhibit in Washington, D.C.
A number of corporate and community sponsors provide support for annual event, which crew more than 170 entries last year — all of which were displayed at the Pico House Gallery at the El Pueblo Historical Monument in the Civic Center district of Downtown.
"The Congressional Student Art Competition helps to build self esteem in young artists and provides the community with valuable insight into the life experiences, challenges, and joys of our talented high school students," said Roybal-Allard, a Democrat who serves as honorary chairperson of the competition. "The art competition also recognizes the hardworking and caring teachers who provide their students with the inspiration, skills, and tools they need to develop their artistic abilities."
Artworks submitted as entries must be two-dimensional original concepts, no larger than 26 inches by 26. Entries and completed entry forms should be delivered Roybal-Allard's District Office at 255 E. Temple Street, Suite 1860, Los Angeles, CA 90012, by 5 p.m. on February 11, 2010. Complete guidelines and information packets are available at all high schools and youth centers in the 34th Congressional District and also on the competition website www.34thcdsac.org. Contact Angelita Ramirez at Roybal-Allard's district office at (213) 628-9230 for more information.
Winning entries will be unveiled during a gallery reception on Saturday, April 17, 2010.
