Yechan Kim is a resident of the Westlake district west of Downtown, but he'll soon be heading east to become a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland
Kim is pictured here next to 34th District U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard, with his mother, Miran Kim, on the far left, and his father, Skylar Kim, on the far right. He will soon graduate from the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies High School, where his academic record and extracurricular activities led Roybal-Allard to nominate him for Annapolis, where he will begin service this summer.
Appointments to the U.S. service academies include full scholarships. Graduates are commissioned as junior officers in their respective branches, and are obligated to serve for five years. Entrance to the academies is highly competitive, and Roybal-Allard sponsors a yearly workshop covering the nomination and application process. Visit house.gov/roybal-allard or call Diana Porras in Roybal-Allard's district office at (213) 628-9230 for more information.
