The Lotus Festival has survived some scares amid the city's tight fiscal picture and is set to return to the Echo Park district northwest of Downtown, where vendors of food, arts, crafts and clothing will set up shop alongside musicians and dancers who that will bring a special focus on Chinese culture amid the general Asian/Pacific Islands theme of the annual event.
A number of healthcare providers will offer various screenings for free, along with a lecture on "holistic fitness," and representatives of other organizations are expected to provide information and referrals for employment and legal services, among others.
The event will be held at Echo Park Lake, which is located between Echo Park Avenue and Glendale Boulevard south of Sunset Boulevard. Festivities will run from 12 noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, and from 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 11.
The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the non-profit L.A. Lotus Festival Inc. are the sponsors of this year's event, and admission is free of charge.
